Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is a very comprehensive term and its lexical meaning is regaining lost functions. The aim of rehabilitation is to give the person as much independence as physically, mentally, economically and socially.

Technological, economic and medical advances prolong human life and increase chronic diseases and disability. At this point, rehabilitation medicine comes into play while curative medicine is helpless. Rehabilitative approaches are different from therapeutic approaches.

In rehabilitation, the goal is to treat the permanent or temporary inadequacies of the person from birth or later, for any reason, by determining the lost and sometimes limited functional capacity, and to ensure that he becomes independent in daily life by being supported psychologically, socially and professionally. Rehabilitation, which is a multi-faceted treatment approach, requires a physiotherapy and rehabilitation program specific to the disease and the patient in physically disabled people, and there is no standardization of the rehabilitation program. A comprehensive rehabilitation program will increase independence, reduce bedtime and dependency on others, and improve quality of life.

Rehabilitation sessions are usually done once or twice a day. Although the duration of the sessions varies according to the disease and the techniques applied, the average is 60 minutes. Rehabilitation sessions may last for months in some diseases, such as complete (tetraplegia) and half (hemiplegia, paraplegia) paralysis.
